What is a Ductless Mini-Split System and How Does it Work?

Ductless Mini Splits have an indoor unit that is connected to the outdoor unit using refrigerated lines.

Air conditioning and summertime go together like movies and popcorn. When it comes to keeping your home cool, you have options. Today, we look at a ductless mini-split system and discuss the features and advantages of zoned HVAC in your home or space.

What is a Ductless Mini-split System?

Ductless system is a type of heating and cooling system that doesn’t need any ducts to regulate the air. This makes ductless units a good option for homes that do not have existing ductwork, or are smaller, like condos, townhomes. It is also a good option for home renovations or add-ons.

How does Ductless work?

Essentially, a ductless cooling system involves a unit mounted to the inside wall of a home that is connected by a pipe through a 3-inch hole to the outside unit. The inside unit is called the indoor air handling unit and the outside unit is called the compressor/condenser. Together, these units are directly connected by a pipe which allows for a streamlined allocation of cool air.

Ductless mini-split systems are good, energy efficient options for add-ons and renovations.

Why choose Ductless?

There are a number of reasons choosing ductless is a good option for your home. Here are a few:

  • Ductless Does Not Require Ductwork
  • Energy Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Cooling Solution
  • Zoned Cooling Opportunities
  • Lower Energy Bill

Ductless Does Not Require Ductwork

Avoiding ductwork means avoiding “difficult-to-install, leaky and bulky ductwork” (Energy Star). Ductwork can inevitably leave more room for wasted energy. Through leaky ducts and more opportunity for wear and tear, avoiding ductwork means avoiding excess energy waste.

Even in homes where ductwork might already be installed, additions or spaces that seem to never cool down can benefit from zoned cooling through ductless systems.

Energy Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Cooling Solution

According to research conducted by Energy Star, certified Energy Star ductless systems use 60% less energy than standard home cooling. This is not only great for reducing your carbon footprint, but for keeping costs down.

Zoned Cooling Opportunities

Home temperature preferences can vary greatly. Some individuals are comfortable sleeping in a 70-degree bedroom, while others prefer much cooler conditions. Zoned cooling provided by ductless A/C systems allows for personalized temperatures across a home.

Ductless systems are energy efficient and cut costs by 30%.

Lower Energy Bill
